Quick question:  is there a way to convert sql server 2005 license to sql server 2008 R2 ?

We purchsed sql server 2005 SE processor licenses before,  and upgrade the instances to sql server 2008 SE R2,  wondering is there a way to use existing sql server 2005 licenses ?  Thanks in advance.

Should contact your MS reseller on this.

If I understand this correctly you upgraded your existing 2005 license ot 2008 correct? If so then you can't use the 2005 license in addition to the 2008 one. If it was an upgrade the old license is invalid once you use the new one. Now if you bought a whole new and different license for 2008 that is a different story.

No, gunneyk, we upgrade our sql server 2005 instances to sql server 2008 R2, not very sure if we need to purchase new sql server 2008 licenses or we can use the existing sql server 2005 licenses ?

Oh I see. Well in that case unless you have software assurance or an Enterprise agreement you absolutely need to buy a new license for 2008. Or at least an upgrade license. You cannot use a 2005 license with 2008 software.
