I am new to SQL Server 2005 and am trying to do a simple Data Import.

First off, I have been finding it extremely difficult so successfully import a tab delimited text file.

After giving up, I converted it to an excel file.

Now I am able to succesfully import the xls file. However, I have a field with order numbers. Half of the order numbers begin with an 'AS' followed by a 6 digit number. The other half of the records are simply just a 6 digit number.

When I import the file, the records that begin with 'AS' are imported. The other order numbers are simply set to NULL.

Any Idea why this is???

Its driving me nuts.

Thank You,
Marc

Thanks Russel,

I get a lot of 'Truncation' errors when importing tab or comma delimited files. I'm assuming this is a similar issue.

What is the best way to make sure every field is imported as VARCHAR(5000)? This will ensure all my data will make it into the DB (or at least the Staging area)

Thanks again,
Marc
