I would like to install SQL 2005 as a named instance along with a SQL2k Default instance and migrate our SQL2k instance.
Can I redirect the clients to the new SQL2k5 instance without touching each client directly?

I agree. It depends on how the app is connecting; change that entry point and your probably ok. I'm actually up right now (4am central) doing this now. Where's my coffee???

Good luck!

You would be better off upgrading in place.

SQL Server 2005 upgrade is fairly smooth. Make sure you install SP2 and hotfixes.
