Periodically, the Log Reader agent fails with the following message:

"The step did not generate any output. The step failed."

After tracing both the Publisher and Distributor servers, it seems to stop at the following statement on the Publisher:

-- sp_helpdistributor
EXECUTE @retcode = @proc
@loc_distributor OUTPUT,
@loc_distribdb OUTPUT,
@loc_directory OUTPUT,
@loc_account OUTPUT,
@loc_mindistretention OUTPUT,
@loc_maxdistretention OUTPUT,
@loc_historyretention OUTPUT,
@loc_historycleanupagent OUTPUT,
@loc_distribcleanupagent OUTPUT,
@@SERVERNAME,
@local = 'local'

where @proc is repl_distributor.master.dbo.sp_helpdistributor

When I try to execute the statement from Query Analyzer, I receive the following error:

Server: Msg 7411, Level 16, State 1, Line 51
Server 'repl_distributor' is not configured for RPC.

I query the master.dbo.sysservers and see an entry for repl_distributor. Here are some of its column values:

srvid: 2
srvstatus: 1609
isremote: 0
rpc: 1
pub: 0
sub: 0
dist: 1
dpub: 0
rpcout: 1

There is little, if not any, documentation on the Internet that acknowledges the error. Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately, executing sp_serveroption on the Distributor did not solve the problem (see statement below). Also, the RPC and RPC OUT columns did not change. Here is a subset of the column values:

srvid: 1
srvstatus: 1609
isremote: 0
rpc: 1
pub: 0
sub: 0
dist: 1
dpub: 0
rpcout: 1
dataaccess: 0
system: 1

EXEC sp_serveroption 'repl_distributor', 'RPC', 'TRUE'
