Does anyone know of an app that will allow you to test a particular connection string to a SQL server 2005 instance?

Thanks,

This was not possible easily and best handled from client side. But we have now a system stored procedure "sp_testlinkedserver" in SQL Server 2005 that allows you to test linked server connection. This stored procedure takes a linked server name as parameter, tests the connectivity and returns 0 for success & 1 for failure. You can find more details about this stored procedure in the SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

would be nice if (within management studio) that there's a little info button somewhere (not in BOL), but rather
attached to the navigation tree that says something like:

"Click here for more relevant tips" thus displaying a small window next to it showing
stored procedures which my help with that particular piece.

for example. whenever you are drilling down to linked servers... and info button would be somewhere
in there.

that would be nice, and would keep us all from drowning in the BOL.

had to mention it.
