Our current production Sql server has the database on a backend Xiotech SAN. We have been asked to look at the feasibility of migrating sql over to blade servers with the database still on the SAN.

We have approximately 8K left in our capex budget for the year and had quoted an HP Server with 5 36GB drives. We were going to strip a Raid 5 array array across the drives and put the root drive on this partition increasing the read times. The database would be placed on the SAN.

It is absolutely critical that we make the right choice and I greatly appreciate any input.

By the way we have budgeted for blade servers next year to decrease our server footprint, better utilizing our space. I am all for using blade servers, but I am concerned about using blade servers for Sql.

We are in currently running Sql 2005 in our test environment and plan to migrate to 2005 in Febuary.

Why are you concerned about blade server for SQL server?

Does it matter that server is brick or thin box shaped?

Just make sure there is plenty of cooling.
