I am trying to set up a new SQL Agent proxy account in an instance of SQL 2000. The account I am trying to use is a regular Windows domain account that is a member of the domain users group. It is also a member of the local users group on the server. I am setting this up so that xp_cmdshell can be used by an account other than one that has Sys Admin rights. Everytime I change the proxy account I get this message.

xp_cmdshell failed to execute because LogonUserW returns error 1326. please make sure the service account SQL Server running under has appropriate privilege. For more information, search Book Online for topic related to xp_sqlagent_proxy_account.

I have researched this extensivley on the web and have not been able to find a solution that works.
Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

I had previously tried adding the account (domain) to the local admin group on the SQL server. That did not work.
