I am interested in setting up SQL Server's Management Data Warehouse, but I have not been able to find an answer to the following question:

How does one control the retention of the data collector files?

Just to be clear, in the individual data collectors (Disk Usage, Query Statistics, Server Activity) you can specify how long you want to retain data in the Management Data Warehouse, but what about the data collection files? Is there a property within the Management Data Warehouse architecture that specifies how long you want to retain files created by the data collector?

If you are talking about the temporary files used by the collection agents to cache the results locally before sending to the DW then no I don't believe there is a way to change that. It should be managed by the agent and cleaned up on a regular basis.
