We have a SQL database that is about 120GB in size. It currently (and since it was created by the application installer) is in 3 data files (Data1.mdf, Data2.ndf, and Data3.ndf).

These data files are sitting on a LUN approx 600GB on our SAN. It is a RAID10 LUN and it is not sharing disks with any other LUN. (So form a hardware perspective, I feel good about he setup).

Our database is growing between 5GB and 10GB a month.

My question is, what are the performance implementations of leaving it is 3 data files? Should I break them down into more, but smaller data files? Does the size of these data files even matter?

Please let me know if this makes sense.

Excellent point Andy.

Placing all non-clustered indexes into their own secondary file group is a good idea as well. Small performance gain can be realized.
