Ok, I am a bit confused about using SQL2005 new security. So, I let's say I have to add permissions to individual objects granted to a role, MyReadOnly. Then create another role called, MyReadWrite. Rather than go through and add all the myreadonly objects to myreadwrite role, how can I simply assign myreadonly role to myreadwrite. TIA!

thanks, rm. Just to make sure you, me, or both of us aren't confuse
Basically, I want MyReadWrite role to inherit rights already existing in MyReadOnly, without having to go through trouble of adding individual obj rights again.

My request should look like this:

ReadOnly RO
ReadWrite RO RW.

THANKS!

At risk of having egg on my face, I think rm was close but had the membership backwards...

Have you tried to make MyReadWrite role to be a member of MyReadOnly? Just like if you want a user to get the permissions of MyReadOnly, you make that user a member of MyReadyOnly.

I was just able to have role, we'll call it DBROLE_1 with permissions to update a certain field
When I had User1 as a member of DBROLE_1, User1 was able to make updates.
I removed User1 from DBROLE_1, and User1 could no longer make the update.
I then added DBROLE_2 as a member of DBROLE_1, and then made User1 a member of DBROLE_2.
Now, User1 could again make the updates granted to DB_ROLE1.
