Hi Kalman,

I would like to know how easy or hard it is to build a data warehouse out of the plain SQL Server vs. buying for example SAS or Informatica. Sorry for the late reply. Thanks.

It is relatively easy to build a data warehouse based on SQL server using Analysis Services.

The simple part also depends on your requirements.

To display the cubes and deliver reports you can use Cognos Reportnet/Powerplay or BI.

Also with SQL 2005, Reporting Services is available.

Keep in mind though, PowerPlay is best cube viewer in the world.

If you buy a package like SAS, you will buy lots of limitations as well. AS gives you freedom.

Hello maranbe,
Also, the Solutions by Design column by Michelle Poolet is going to monthly starting in September. She'll be covering designing the data warehouse for the next year. We're also going to have forum threads linked to the articles so you can comment, ask questions, and post feedback. We'll be posting a list of all the topics we're going to cover or have covered and you can submit questions to Michelle on topics that she hasn't written yet. So, please share your thoughts, experiences and needs in this area. Thanks!

Microsoft also has a "best practices page" for SQL Server 2005.
