New Database - Captureing Data from Invoices

A friend of mine has a small business and I want to help him out creating a Transactional/Marketing Database. How do you get started with the initial load of the data? He has all of his transaction invoices as TXT files. Is there a program that can read a TXT file and grab specific field information and then populate as a delimited file.

Right now the text files are purely invoices of the orders (order forms). The data is not formated in columns yet.

I would recommend that you parse the invoice text files with VB or C# code to create a cleaner format that you will be able to load into the database (like you said).

Take a look at Microsoft MSDN's website to get a better understanding of the file access methods in order to parse the file:
