Hi - another question about RS...

We have RS 2000 installed on a dedicated "reporting" server. It's database however, it on an old, separate SQL 2000 instance.

We also have a new SQL 2008 R2 instance (on the same machine as the older 2000 instance)....

My question is, can I detach the 2 RS databases from the SQL 2000 instance, and re-attach them to the SQL 2008 R2 instance, and then go to the dedicated "reporting" server, and update the pointers?

Someone told me I can simply update the pointers by doing this:
RSConfig -c -s Server name -d Reporting Services database name -a Sql|Windows -uUser name -p User password

Will that work? Essentially we will have the Reporting Services server, pointing to a SQL 2008R2 instance for it's database (which was brought over from SQL 2000).

I also would like to know (if the above would work), if in the future we could "upgrade" the SQL 2000 RS to SQL 2008 RS? Is this an "in place" upgrade? Or would I end up with RS2000 and RS2008 on the same box?

Thanks for your knowledge!

have a look at this article: http://choirulamri.org/archives/512

RS 2000 is, if memory serves properly, actually a pre-release of RS 2005, so the article should be relevant.

Also, be sure to see this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...22792.aspx

Thanks for the links...

Putting the actual upgrade aside for the moment , can we move the location of the RS2000 databases from a SQL 2000 instance, to a SQL 2008 instance, (by detaching and reattaching), and then running the below command on the report server, so it knows where the new database location is:

RSConfig -c -s Server name -d Reporting Services
database name -a Sql|Windows -uUser name -p User password

Would this work? Seems to me it should - we would at this point still have RS2000, but the database would be in our 2008 instance, which is 1/2 the battle.

Thanks for any comments.

I think so. I've never moved an RS installation before.
